Just this last week I had the opportunity and the pleasure of heading out to The Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall for the much awaited Distant Worlds Music From Final Fantasy Concert.. well when I say much awaited, I mean for some I’m sure.. I missed it the last time it was around these parts and actually had no idea that they had plans of coming back to lil’ ol Michigan. Luckily, Facebook advertising was useful and accurate for once and brought it to my and a few others attention whom had actually already bought tickets..
The selection was surprisingly rounded, to be honest I was expecting something along the lines of:
Main Theme, Eyes On Me, Chocobo Theme, Melodies of Life, One Winged Angel, etc.
..And though one or 2 of those were actually played, they also pulled songs like Theme Of Love, Vammo’Alla Flamenco, and Bombing Mission from the opening of Final Fantasy VII out of their hats.
In the end due to lack of time Conductor Arnie Roth took a vocal poll of which would be the last song; Terra’s Theme or One Winged Angel. Regretfully [though expectantly] everyone chose One Winged Angel, which we’d all already heard a full orchestral version of. Oh Well! ..Overall it was dope! An enjoyable concert for anyone who has ever been a fan of the series..though I was a little disappointed that there weren’t more songs from Final Fantasy VI, which is one of the most musically sound games in my opinion..to my understanding the repertoire is always changing.
Maybe Next Time!
If you have the means, I highly recommend anyone who calls themselves a fan Final Fantasy not to miss this concert!

So.. last weekend I was Road Trip-bound for the 12th annual Anime Central Convention held at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare and the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois..
Anime Central (ACen) is the largest Anime, Manga, and Asian Culture Convention in the Midwest, hailing over 13,000 friends and fans every year!
Now right about now you may be asking yourself: “Lex, what the hell are you doing at an Anime Convention?” ..well, while I do admit to being an avid fan of Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Wing, ..Samurai Champloo, etc.. that isn’t my main reason for attending. Anyone who actually knows Lex should know about the 7years of my life [01-08] that I dedicated to professional arcade gaming [mainly the Tekken Series] so I go to pay homage and also to compete in the tournaments and casual gaming sessions that are held every year. In other words.. I’ve more than earned my stripes in the nerd-world thank you very much.
My motives aside.. the main reason that most people go is to Cosplay which is short for “Costume Roleplay”. People pick their favorite anime, manga, comic book, video game, graphic novel, band or movie character and do their best to outfit themselves to look as much like that character as possible. Basically it’s like Halloween.. only the costumes for the most part are taken 10x more seriously.
Japanese street fashion such as Visual-Kei, Lolita, and Steampunk are also very widely portrayed in Fashion Shows and by fans alike. From your favorite Japanese cars, to your favorite card games..

..DJs, A Masquerade, Masses of Merchandise, and a Rave with over 5000 people..there truly is something for everyone here.. well almost everyone.. Sometimes I even join in on the festivities! If you’re any type of a fan at all, you should definitely take into consideration attending, but unfortunately you’ll have to wait 364 days until the next one because this year’s ACen is over and done!

Let’s face it..everyone who’s anyone in the tech-savvy world has at least heard of the newest popular social networking site that has taken the world by storm in only 2 short years. But just in case you for some reason or another have allowed yourself to become far separated from the IN crowd..
Twitter is a site that has made it possible for all of us buzzin’ around our cities with our BlackBerrys, iPhones, laptops, etc.. to stay constantly connected via ‘Status Updates’ creating a micro-blog that other Twitter users can “Follow”. Low key, it ain’t nothin’ new.. It’s no magical technology or anything, essentially it’s just like an RSS Feed subscription.. but what truly makes the site so clever is how it comprehensively connects to everything from Facebook to SMS Text Messaging. If you’re looking for something a little more compact than Myspace/Facebook.. Twitter is your friend!

The N.E.R.D Show at Wayne State was sick.
It was a free show ..so people were just piling in by the dozens.. Craziness!

I wasn’t dancin’ too much that day but you know me..
I can smell a circle from a mile away.. A couple cats were gettin’ on the Good Foot..
I never took a whole lot of time out to learn Krumping.. so I love seeing people krump.
I respect it.. it’s a powerful dance, and some people get pretty creative.. Props!
As N.E.R.D hit the stage everybody went nuts..
And before you knew it.. the crowd surfers were everywhere..
..and when I say everywhere I mean mostly on the ground. Even after Pharrell’s heartfelt speech about all of the crowd surfers being as safe as possible. Everybody Nose that once you’re in the air, you’re in the hands of the people.. Oh well, it’s all in good fun.. and no one ended up getting hurt..
..Well, no one except my glasses..
which ended up getting destroyed in the midst of the crowd.
To have so many people hang on to everything you do..
..to stand at the edge of the stage and serenade the crowd.
Has to be an amazing feeling!

Okay, I have so many monthly subscriptions to magazines.. Interview, Black Enterprise, INC, Game Informer, Games for Windows, etc, etc.. and I rarely feel I have time to read.. well basically, any of them.. apart from Interview of course.. and even that takes some intense planning.
But when I’m at home with an idle moment I do my best to check out some of the rest of my favorites, which defnitely includes Spin. There’s a column in every magazine called: “In My Room” ..where they interview an Artist and he/she gives sort of a synopsis of the things that are.. in their room. Makes sense, yeah? Well in the March issue they hooked up with Trail Of Dead’s Conrad Keely.. it’s pretty cool, he talks about his viola, blueprints for a ship he was designing, his cats..you know, the usual things..
..But really what drew my attention to this article was what he considered the 5th monumental item in his apartment. A glass pipe ..and I quote:
I’m an advocate of legalization. I smoke probably once or twice a day. It’s a social thing, too, so if friends come over, we’ll smoke out. But on a pragmatic level, it’s very good for focus when doing artwork and composing music-you can get into that world. “Cause, you know, what are we doing as artists and musicians? We’re world building, aren’t we?”
That was beautifully put Mr. Keely, could anyone agree any more?
